Slumdog Millionaire
Over the weekend I went to go see Slumdog Millionaire. Everyone lately has been talking about how amazing this movie is, so i figured what the hell I might as well see it if it's REALLY that good. Oh boy were they wrong. I thought the movie was actually absolutely terrible. Yes it was different, yes it made you feel bad for the underdog, and yes it kept you on the edge of your seat. However, at the same time I felt the actors were terrible, the soundtrack did not fit the setting, and the storyline just didn't add up at times, it was a little too far-fetched. If I were to describe the movie in one word it would be insipid. At one point, I actually laughed out loud because I thought of something Mr. Bennett said during class one day. He was talking about (I forgot which movie) how you knew everything that happened to the character, yet, as you were watching the movie you sat there on the tip of your seat all nervous and waiting for the outcome, but you knew it already! The same exact thing happened to me watching this film, and I felt like such an idiot because you already know that he wins the money. But anyway back to talking about the film, I just did not feel anything spectacular was produced. I personally don't think it should have won Best Picture at the Oscars, but what can you do I'm not the judge.

Ha. I wonder if it's possible that you're suffering from "hype syndrome." That's when you go to see a film that's been hyped to the maxx. Frankly, that is usually the kiss of death for a film because, after all, a film is just a film, even the greatest films are rarely life-changing events. I wonder how you would have felt had you just stumbled in 4 months ago without knowing a thing about it.
ReplyDeleteYou were not supposed to be surprised about him winning the money. The movie was not about him winning the money. Even he, when the money was won, barely reacted, because he cared so little about it. He was doing it because he knew Latika would be watching, which is pretty darn romantic if you ask me. When you say that the acting is terrible, keep in mind that every child actor had no prior experience and was picked straight from the slums and placed into this film. For the teen actors, this was only their first movie. With those factors, I'd say the acting was pretty damn good considering.
ReplyDeleteSo basically, I disagree with you, but nice post.
I wasn't saying the movie was about him winning the money. I would have completely missed the whole message put across, I was just simply saying with already knowing the outcome I still sat there wondering if he's going to win or not during the flashbacks... But the part that was a little far-fetched to me was how many times he in fact found Latika. He knew she watched the show so what he just decided one day to walk onto it? They never really explained to well how he wound up getting on the show in the first place. & bravo to all the kids who were in it, I didn't know it was their first film and considering that they did an amazing job...but also considering that it wasn't Oscar worthy enough.
ReplyDeleteBut that's just my opinion I could be wrong.
No opinion is ever wrong! =)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that you guys are talking about the child actors, because I actually thought those performances were the best in the movie. The kids actually drew me into the story more than any other actor did. I didn't think any of the other performances were particularly bad, but some, like Frieda Pinto who played older Latika, left a lot to be desired. Just my opinion.
I think almost every movie is a little out there when it comes to the plot. I get what your saying, I sort of saw what was coming too. But I didn't necessarily think it was a bad thing. Maybe the movie didn't deserve the lable it recieved, but I still thought it was pretty compelling.
