How I felt after watching Midnight Cowboy today...

I still haven't decided if i like this movie or not. It's a very different film and gives me all different kind of emotions while watching it. In particular, while watching Midnight Cowboy today I felt very weirded out. Yesterday, I felt sorry for Joe Buck, he kind of realizes that he isn't what he originally thought he was and kept having no luck, especially after being cheated out by Ratso. I hated Ratso because he scammed him, yet today i completely changed my mind. I felt bad for Ratso even more than Joe Buck. You get a more in depth analysis of what his life is like, how he got there, and what his dreams are. That is the part that weirded me out. I came to the conclusion that he's gay, he wants Joe Buck secretly that is obviously revealed to us in the fantasy of them running on the beach. However, another part of that fantasy that caught my attention was when it showed him outrunning Joe. This left me feeling sorry for Ratso because he has a bum leg. As you can see, this film leaves me very confused and my emotions are all over the place with which characters to like and which characters to dislike. I hope the remainder of the film will sum it all up.

    Thanks for an intersting post. Your conclusion that "Ratso is obviously gay" is not borne out by the evidence. The fantasy of them running along the beach can be interpreted in the way you suggest, but it's not obvious. The way it's presented to us in his fantasy is that the two of them are in Florida making loads of money as hustlers. He simply beats Joe out in a foot race. The undertone of them "frolicking together, hand in hand, along the beach like two lovebirds" is added by you.

    Now, I'm not blind, nor was I born yesterday. The undercurrent is certainly there. But, in the absence of any overt sexuality between the two, we cannot say that Ratso is gay. The point you make, however, that the movie is not at all clear, and we are confused about things, is certainly correct.

    I definatly don't think that Ratso is gay. Weird yes but gay no. First of all he was trying to help Joe pursue jis objective of being a hustler. Also during his fantasy he has women from all different directions caliing out his name
