Top Hat?

Uhhh so I don't know if I'm feeling this movie. I know it was made back in the 1930's and was filmed in black and white, but something about it had me falling asleep in class today. It is funny with the pun intended throughout the scenes, but I feel the acting is either off key or just plain bad. It also is an obvious scenario, I can already tell what is going to happen beforehand. Who knows maybe I'm just being a Debbie downer on Top Hat because I'm more of a action/drama kind of girl. That's probably why I'm not really giving this a chance. I really need to broaden my horizons to new genres. Who knows, maybe it will turn out to be good in the end.

  3. I didn't see what was wrong with it. I have no problem with musicals and can respect a good dance number. Hairspray is one of my favorite movies. Something tells me that if real life occasionally broke into song and dance, everyones lives would be A LOT easier. Unless we were in a Sweeney Todd type musical. Then that could be detrimental.

  4. Well, Top Hat is certainly not one of my favorites of this year, but it is not horrible or unwatchable, and it is nice to see that it is far less preach-y than Signs and the ideas are not just shoved down my throat.

As a general rule, I don't like musicals, and find the idea of them absolutely horrible and have never liked a musical in my life, but this is not one of the worst. I am glad that they have only burst into song twice so it is not as bad.

I'm willing to give it a chance.

  5. Hey this movie needs to go through some serious changes because right now there is nothin to it. The entire term we've been watching movies with some sort of underlying meaning whether it was exostentialism or somethin else. So far there is nothin here its just plot of some happy guy tryin to get some beautiful girl. Have u ever seen that movie before. The conflict starting to develop seems to be also rather ridicoulous and right out of a Shakespearean play. I haven't seen any great film techniques either and I was looking for them after the movie lost my attention. This begs me to ask the question Mr. Bennett why r u showing this film at all?
As for my spelling/grammer errors lets just say I was never good in English class through on top of that an informal blog which I dont bother to profread u get this imperfect master piece.

  6. Jimmy, your rule has been mine for a while and I think the government should pass a law banning musicals from being created. You see where my feelings on this film are going. Just as Mr. Bennett said, if black and white doesn't make you realize you are watching a film, then the spontaneous singing and dancing probably will. This film just doesn't strike me as entertaining in any form of the word and this is the obvious intention of the film. Just my three cents.

  7. Ouch, I love musicals. No, they're not realistic, but why do movies have to always be realistic? Real life sucks sometimes, hasn't that been a general theme of most of the movies we've seen in class so far? Musicals can be corny I guess, but they offer a fun little escape.

That being said, I was out today and have no idea whether or not Top Hat is good or bad.

  8. Can't believe I didn't mention the word in my previous comment. Musicals are corny. I hate corny. Not corn though, especially the little Asian corn. (I mean, how do they do it?) I like realistic movies because usually the characters are worse off than I and it makes me feel slightly better, but even more so, watching other people suck at life is usually humorous or enjoyable. When someone tells me that I'm not supposed to laugh at something, I ask them one question,"If you saw it on TV, would you laugh?". I tend to find humor in the darkest of places, as well as the brightest, just not in musicals.

  9. If you don't like Top Hat, you won't like a lot of films from that time. The acting is much less subtle, but that's because the medium was even younger then than it is now. I like the note of optimism at the end, I haven't seen the movie either so I don't know.
